  3. Welcome.  Thank you for buying the National Museum of American Art CD-ROM. 
  4. For optimal performance, please read the following information before 
  5. launching your program.
  6.  
  7. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  8.  
  9. Windows(TM) CD-ROM System Requirements
  10. Multimedia PC including:
  11. *    486 / 33Mhz or better
  12. *    8 MB of RAM 
  13. *    VGA card with 256 colors and 640 x 480 resolution
  14.     (SVGA with 24 bit recommended)
  15. *    Color monitor
  16. *    Double-speed CD-ROM drive
  17. *    Microsoft Windows(TM) 3.1 or higher or Windows(TM) 95
  18. *    Sound card
  19.  
  20. INSTALLATION
  21.  
  22. Windows95(TM)
  23.     Insert the CD and, when the NMAA window appears, 
  24.     double-click on the icon labeled Setup.exe.
  25.     Then follow the instructions in the install program that runs.
  26.  
  27. Windows(TM) 3.1 or 3.1.1
  28.     Insert the CD and use the File Manager to open the CD-ROM.
  29.     Double-click on the icon labeled Setup.exe.
  30.     Then follow the instructions in the install program that runs.

  32. QuickTime for Windows(TM) Installation
  33.     The National Museum of American Art CD-ROM requires installation of 
  34.     QuickTime for Windows(TM) for proper playback of videos, audio media, 
  35.     and slide shows.  We strongly recommend that you install QuickTime 
  36.     for Windows(TM) 2.1, which is provided on this CD-ROM.
  37.     QuickTime for Windows(TM) 2.1 can be installed during the National Museum 
  38.     of American Art CD-ROM installation process or at anytime after the 
  39.     application is installed. 
  40.  
  41.     The QuickTime for Windows(TM) 2.1 installer will search for existing 
  42.     versions of QuickTime for Windows(TM) and will provide you with the 
  43.     opportunity to quit the installer, if QuickTime for Windows(TM) is 
  44.     already loaded.  
  45.  
  46.     If an old version of QuickTime for Windows is detected and replaced,
  47.     you must restart Windows before loading National Museum of American 
  48.     Art CD-ROM. If you do not restart Windows, the National Museum of 
  49.     American Art CD-ROM will display a General Protection Fault.

  52. HELP
  53.  
  54.    The National Museum of American Art CD-ROM includes "context sensitive"
  55.    help for every screen. When using the program, just click the "?" button
  56.    and help balloons will appear. 
  57.    The CD-ROM also includes detailed instructions on how to use the 
  58.    program in the OVERVIEW section available from the Main Screen.

  61. KNOWN CONFLICTS
  62.  
  63.    The Novell CD-ROM driver, NWCDEX.EXE is not compatible with QuickTime
  64.    for Windows.  The driver will produce an "Integer divide by Zero" 
  65.    error. The Microsoft MSCDEX.EXE CD-ROM driver provided with Windows 
  66.    3.11 can be used in place of the Novell driver.

  80.         modem and external or internal CD-ROM drive.

  84. INSTALLATION PROBLEMS:
  85.  
  86. "Installation fails because Windows cannot create a program group." 
  87. In Windows 3.1, you can only have 40 Program Groups at one time. 
  88. Try removing unnecessary Program Groups and reinstall the National 
  89. Museum of American Art CD-ROM.

  91.  
  92. PROBLEMS WITH QUICKTIME MOVIE PLAYBACK:
  93.  
  94. "Divide by Zero error while installing QuickTime."
  95. This message means the system has run out of DOS memory. Try booting 
  96. from a floppy disk with minimal autoexec.bat and config.sys, then 
  97. install QuickTime.  Once QuickTime is installed, restart your computer 
  98. in the normal fashion.
  99.  
  100. "The QuickTime installer cannot delete VIEWENU.DLL (an icon file for 
  101. the Viewer Windows item)because it is "in use." Quit the QuickTime 
  102. installer, leaving a partial, incomplete install.  Restart Windows 
  103. and reinstall QuickTime.
  104.  
  105. "Movies are not playing smoothly, frames are dropping out, etc."  
  106. Your software CD-ROM caching may be interfering with QuickTime's' 
  107. internal caching.  Turn off external caching (for example, SmartDrive.) 
  108. Refer to your DOS manual for help with SmartDrive. 
  109.  
  110. "Your audio or video drivers may be out of date." Turn the volume all the
  111. way down during playback of National Museum of American Art CD-ROM.  If 
  112. the video plays smoothly without the sound, then the problem probably 
  113. resides with your sound or video card.  Refer to the instruction manuals 
  114. for these cards for help diagnosing and resolving driver problems. Obtain
  115. the latest drivers for your sound and video cards from the manufacturers.
  116.  
  117. "Virtual memory may be interfering with QuickTime's' internal caching." 
  118. If you have sufficient memory to run the program without it, turn off 
  119. virtual memory.
  120.  
  121. "You may be using the Microsoft Speaker driver which does not allow sound
  122. and video to play at the same time." Contact your computer hardware 
  123. manufacturer or Microsoft for information on replacement drivers.
  124.  
  125. "Your computer may not be running in Turbo mode."  Make sure the turbo 
  126. button on the front of your computer is on.
  127.  
  128. "There may be a DMA conflict between hardware components in your computer"  
  129. Reconfigure the drivers for your hardware so there are no overlapping DMA 
  130. assignments. Refer to the instructions/manuals for your hardware 
  131. components for help with reconfiguration.

  134. PLAYBACK TIPS:
  135.  
  136. The National Museum of American Art CD-ROM is designed for optimal viewing
  137. at true color setting or at millions of colors and with 4x or faster CD-ROMs.
  138.  
  139. The National Museum of American Art CD-ROM is designed for optimal 
  140. viewing at 640 x 480.
  141.  
  142.  
  143. For Best Performance:
  144.  
  145. The NMAA CD-ROM has been designed to allow it to execute entirely from 
  146. a hard disk.  This option requires at least 650 MBytes of free space on 
  147. the target hard drive.
  148.  
  149. Use the Win95 Explorer or Windows 3.1 File Manager to open the NMAA CD-ROM.  
  150. Double-click on the NMAA Installer icon.  Select the Basic option 
  151. and complete the installation process.  Then, copy ALL of the contents of 
  152. the NMAA/Data directory on the CD-ROM to the Data directory created on your hard 
  153. disk during the installation process.  Start NMAA normally by double-
  154. clicking on the NMAA.EXE icon on your hard disk in the directory created 
  155. during installation.  
  156. NOTE: You must still have the NMAA CD-ROM in your CD-ROM player to use this 
  157. option.
